Romagna's hinterland is full of history, antique villages and castles, places with special antique atmospheres.

The Republic of San Marino is among the most antique and small countries of the world, located just 15 km from Rimini. The historic centre offers alleys, antique walls, towers and suggestive corners. During the years many events  and shows entertain and fascinate visitors.

Gradara 's Castle , is a magnificent example of XIV century military architecture. It was the setting of the love story between Paolo and Francesca that Dante made famous . The rooms remember the splendours of the important families that once governed there : the Malatesta, the Sforza and the Della Rovere. Today, shows and events take place in the enchanting medieval setting of Gradara, to entertain guests.

Montebello is famous for the story of Azzurrina, a young girl that disappeared during the Medieval age, and that still today can be heard talking and crying among the walls of the antique building. The current structure has a stratification : a roman look-out tower that during the Middle Ages became a military fortress and then during the XV century a manor.

San Leo, located 32 km from Rimini, is situated on an enormous  cliff. At the tip you'll find the unconquerable fortress, rebuilt by Francesco di Giorgio Martini during the XV century. The antique city was the theatre of civil and military battles for about 2 millenniums. A large archiectural patrimony has been conserved. The view that can be enjoyed from San Leo is one of the prettiest and most characteristic of the region.

Rimini's historic centre :

The Arch of Augustus, 27 BC, was built at the junction between the Via Flaminia and Via Emilia. Built in Istrian stone it was a city gate united to the  city walls in the medieval period. The arch was deprived of the top and the battlements visible today was built in the tenth century.

The Tiberius Bridge was built by decree of Emperor Augustus. Built entirely in stone from Istria, with five arches, in Doric style ,it is one of the most remarkable surviving Roman bridges. An important and harmonious  work, remarkable from a  technical and formal point of view . It was studied and admired by great artists such as Giovanni Bellini, Andrea Palladio, and Antonio da Sangallo.

The Surgeon's House in Piazza Ferrari a large archaeological complex developed between the Roman late imperial era and late antiquity: an exceptional historical and urban stratification, evidence of 2000 years of city life. The remains of the House are accompanied by many excavated finds on display in the Archaeological Museum of Rimini.

Castel Sismondo maintains the original charm of residence-fortress, thanks to the mighty walls, the massive square towers and large ditches. It was started in 1437 by Sigismondo Malatesta, conceived as a worthy venue for the court and for the garrison and as a sign of power and supremacy over the city. Today, among other things, it is  the seat of important cultural events.
